This week, most of my finds were found at Coinstar machines. At Schnuck's, I found 1 very shiney new 2006 penny in the parking lot, and then in the Coinstar machine I found 2 very dirty pennies and a slug. Yesterday, I found 1 quarter in the vending machine in our apartment work-out facility.
Check out a picture of the slug that I found. I can see why it was rejected, because it is just a bit smaller than a quarter, so it is a poorly made slug, or might not be a slug at all. I like to think that people are trying to rip off the Coinstar machine with slugs, since they are evil by taking %7!!
Late in the week, I had to stop by the UPS store to drop off some eBay packages. The UPS store is attached to a Dieberg's (Another St. Louis Grocery store chain). I am there a few times a week, as I have a good number of eBay items to send, and I always walk by their Coinstar machine. This was the first time that I found anything, and it was a solid find, a 1960 Silver Dime.
Before this race started, I didn't know a thing about silver dimes, but Chris got me into them and taught me how to spot them. Now I check the edges of all my dimes. As you can see from the pictures below, I put it next to a normal dime and you can see the edge of the silver dime is totally silver, unlike current dimes. So Chris gets the assist by making me aware of the silver dime, and how to spot them.
Speaking of silver dimes, check out this article I found while I was doing a bit of reading on silver dimes. I think I would have noticed the double struck quarter or penny, but I did not know about the 1982 dime, 1943 penny or the 1965 dime. Good info to have for the rest of this race!
I also must add a story that I forgot about during my last post. One of the quarters was found while I was going through the security screening. The man in front of my dropped the quarter and didn't notice it, and walked through the metal detector. I figured it was now lost and could be picked up. I was still getting all my things adjusted, and I guess that I placed it on top of my jacket, because when I moved the basket of stuff onto the conveyor belt, the quarter fell and made a pretty loud noise. At which point the TSA lady, picked it up and handed it back to me!
Total for the Race - $204.12
