Day 79

On the way to work I hit a few of my normal spots (KFC, Taco Bell, Wendy’s) but came up with nothing. I did stop at the bank, and found 1 penny at the nearby Arby’s. I also found 1 penny in the hallway at work. Not exactly the follow up to yesterday that I had hoped for.

I finished my book Flyboys by James Bradley. It was a very interesting look into the Pacific theater during WWII. It was well written and was hard to put down, evidenced by the fact that I polished it off in about 3 weeks. At times it was very disturbing reading about the real accounts of how Japanese, American, Chinese and other POW’s were treated and killed during WWII. Bradley wrote great background information which detailed the crimes of the Japanese AND American soldiers, so it wasn’t just a Pro-American book (Which many history books try to be, sweep our countries bad deeds under the rug while vilifying other countries for the same acts). While it was very interesting and a good read, it still dealt with many gruesome stories of prisoner abuse and it centered around the stories of 7 American Flyboys who were shot-down over Chichi Jima and executed in various ways (Beheading, Bayoneted, and even some cannibalism). Amazingly one of the Flyboys who was shot down was Ex-President George H. W. Bush, and his story of survival was amazing. Crazy to think that when he was President, people used to call him a wimp.

As you can tell, it was not a fun breezy summer read. After such a book, I need to switch gears, so my new book is The Last Best League by Jim Collins, which chronicles a season with the Chatham A’s in the Cape Cod league. In the little bit that I’ve read, it’s been enjoyable, and a review will come later. The only thing that annoys me, is that there are 21 pages (A Preface AND a Prologue) before we get to Chapter 1 and the pages aren’t numbered like the Super Bowl. Seriously, unless you are getting docked for every page numbered over 300, this is not needed. Turn the prologue into Chapter 1 and be on your way!

Total for the Day - $0.02
Total for the Race - $19.56
